About Complete Architectural Design Projects

A farmhouse inverts the usual constraint of residential architecture. Where an urban plot forces a building upward and inward, a generous rural site allows it to spread, and the discipline shifts from fitting a house in to deciding how much of the land the house should occupy and how the rest is held. Complete architectural design here starts with the landscape — where the ground falls, which existing trees stay, where the approach arrives and what is worth framing — because the building's position on the plot is the decision that governs every one that follows. A central courtyard is the organising device that makes a spread-out plan work. It pulls daylight and cross-ventilation into rooms that sit deep in the footprint, gives the house an interior face that stays private regardless of what happens at the boundary, and works as usable outdoor space through most of the year in this climate. A wraparound veranda does the practical work alongside it, shading walls and glazing from direct sun, keeping monsoon rain off the facade, and forming a genuine threshold between the courtyard and the fields beyond. Setting rustic stone against modern glass volumes is a contrast that depends entirely on the junction between them — how the stone is coursed, where it stops, how the glazing is set back — since it is the detail at that meeting point, not the materials themselves, that separates a deliberate composition from an accidental one. A guest pavilion held slightly apart from the main house gives visitors independence and keeps the household's own routine intact. Organic landscaping ties the whole plot together and matters more at this scale than at any urban one.

Designing in Derabassi, Punjab

Derabassi sits south of Zirakpur along the main corridor toward Ambala, where the tricity's density gives way to open agricultural land. Plot sizes here are of a different order to anything available in Mohali or Chandigarh, and that is the reason farmhouse development has concentrated along this stretch — space that simply cannot be bought inside the planned sectors. Building on open land brings its own considerations. Services that an urban sector supplies as a matter of course may need providing on site, ground conditions and water table vary across plots and have to be tested rather than assumed, and a building standing without neighbours is fully exposed to sun and wind from every direction, which makes orientation and shading decisions carry more weight than they would in a sheltered urban street. The compensation is freedom: no overlooking, no borrowed light, and long uninterrupted views. Derabassi's road connection keeps Zirakpur, Mohali and Chandigarh within a comfortable drive, which is what makes a weekend or full-time retreat here practical. RS Design Associates covers Derabassi from the Zirakpur head office on VIP Road.
