About Kitchen Design Projects
Kitchen design is the most technically demanding room in a house per square foot, because plumbing, electrical, gas, extraction, drainage and joinery all have to be coordinated within a small area where a mistake of a few centimetres is visible and expensive to correct. The planning discipline still rests on the relationship between the three things that get used constantly — cold storage, the sink and the cooking surface. Keeping those within an efficient triangle, with uninterrupted counter space on either side of the hob and beside the sink, is what makes a kitchen comfortable to work in for hours rather than merely good-looking in photographs. An island changes the room's behaviour, adding preparation surface and turning the kitchen into somewhere people gather rather than a service space that is passed through. It only works with clearance on all sides — generous enough for two people to move past each other and for appliance and cabinet doors to open fully — and if it carries a sink or hob, the services have to be routed through the floor, which is a decision made at slab stage and not later. A butler's pantry takes the pressure off the main room by absorbing bulk storage, secondary preparation and the mess that a serious cook generates, which is what allows an open-plan kitchen to stay presentable while genuinely being used. Calacatta and comparable marbles are chosen for depth of veining and are porous, so sealing and realistic expectations about patina matter. Integrated appliances demand exact joinery tolerances and correct ventilation behind the cabinetry. Custom cabinetry earns its cost through interior fittings planned around what is actually stored, and through hardware rated for decades of daily use.
Designing in VIP Road, Zirakpur
The VIP Road corridor is Zirakpur's main spine, running through the town and connecting it to Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, and it has become the focus of much of the area's residential development. Housing here is predominantly apartments and newer builds, which shapes kitchen work in a specific way: most projects are fitouts or renovations inside an existing shell rather than kitchens planned from scratch. That makes the existing service positions the starting point. Drainage in particular is the least forgiving constraint, since waste pipes need a consistent fall and relocating a sink more than a short distance from the existing stack can mean rebuilding the floor. Gas and electrical runs allow more flexibility but still have to be planned before any joinery is ordered. Extraction is the constraint people underestimate most, because ducting to an external wall is limited by the building's structure and every bend reduces performance — which matters in a kitchen where Indian cooking generates significant heat, steam and oil. Ceiling height and window position are fixed and determine how much daylight the counter gets and how tall wall units can go. RS Design Associates' head office is on VIP Road, Zirakpur, within the same corridor.
